How it works

Image Converter is a web page that does its work on your own device. The file you choose is opened by your browser, changed there and saved from there; it is never sent to a server, so there is no copy of it anywhere to delete, no queue and no waiting for an upload. Most online tools of this kind send your file to their servers and work on it there, and many keep it for a while. This one does not. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on how often you use it, and the result downloads the moment it is ready.

Which format, and why

• JPG is the safe choice for photographs. Every phone, computer, website and upload form accepts it, and it keeps photos small by discarding detail the eye barely notices. It cannot store transparency.
• PNG keeps every pixel exactly and supports transparency, so logos, icons, screenshots and anything with text stay crisp. Photos saved as PNG are several times larger than the same photo as JPG.
• WebP is the modern web format. It makes files roughly a quarter to a third smaller than JPG at the same quality and supports transparency. Browsers all read it, but some older programs and upload forms still do not, which is the usual reason to convert WebP to JPG.
• AVIF is newer still and smaller again. It appears here only when your browser can create it.

Why a downloaded image is WebP when you wanted JPG

Websites increasingly serve images as WebP to load faster, so "Save image as" often gives you a .webp file that an email program, a document editor or a form then refuses. Converting it to JPG here takes a second and does not upload the picture anywhere.

Transparency and backgrounds

When an image with a transparent background, such as a logo, is converted to JPG, the transparent areas have to become a solid colour. White suits most documents and marketplaces; pick a different colour to match the page it will sit on, or choose PNG or WebP to keep the transparency.

Converting repeatedly loses quality

Each time an image is saved as JPG or WebP, a little detail is lost. Converting back and forth several times makes it visibly worse. Keep your original, and convert from it whenever you need a new copy.

Questions

Are my images uploaded?

No. The conversion is done by your browser on your own device, and the images are never sent to our server or anyone else's.

How do I convert WebP to JPG?

Choose your WebP images, keep JPG selected, and download them. Each file is converted as soon as it is added, and several files can be downloaded together as a ZIP.

Will converting to JPG lose quality?

JPG always compresses a little. At the default quality of 90 the difference is not visible in normal photos. Converting to PNG keeps every pixel exactly, but photos saved as PNG are much larger.

What happens to transparent backgrounds?

PNG and WebP keep transparency. JPG cannot store it, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose, white by default.

Can I convert HEIC photos from an iPhone?

Use the HEIC to JPG Converter, which opens iPhone HEIC photos in any browser. This converter can open HEIC only in Safari, because other browsers cannot read the format by themselves.

Which format should I choose?

JPG for photos and anything you upload to forms or marketplaces. PNG for logos, screenshots and graphics with sharp edges or transparency. WebP for websites, where it gives the smallest files.

Can I convert a multi-page TIFF?

Yes. Each page of the TIFF becomes its own image, named with its page number, so a ten-page fax or scan gives ten JPGs. Download them one by one or all in a ZIP. To turn the pages into one document instead, convert them and then use JPG to PDF.

How do I get all the sizes out of an ICO file?

Drop the icon in and every size stored inside it appears as its own row, largest first, such as 256 x 256, 48 x 48 and 16 x 16. Download the size you need, or all of them in a ZIP.

Which DDS textures open?

The compressed formats games use, BC1 (DXT1), BC2 (DXT3), BC3 (DXT5), BC4, BC5 and BC7, and uncompressed textures. BC5 normal maps are shown with the blue channel worked out, the way texture editors show them. HDR textures (BC6H and floating point) have no single look as a normal image, so the tool says so rather than guessing.

What size does an SVG become?

An SVG is a drawing with no fixed pixel size, so you choose: its own stated size, or 512, 1,024, 2,048 or 4,096 pixels on the long side. The shape is kept and edges are drawn fresh at that size, so they stay crisp.

Is it free?
