Which format, and why

• JPG is the safe choice for photographs. Every phone, computer, website and upload form accepts it, and it keeps photos small by discarding detail the eye barely notices. It cannot store transparency.
• PNG keeps every pixel exactly and supports transparency, so logos, icons, screenshots and anything with text stay crisp. Photos saved as PNG are several times larger than the same photo as JPG.
• WebP is the modern web format. It makes files roughly a quarter to a third smaller than JPG at the same quality and supports transparency. Browsers all read it, but some older programs and upload forms still do not, which is the usual reason to convert WebP to JPG.
• AVIF is newer still and smaller again. It appears here only when your browser can create it.

Why a downloaded image is WebP when you wanted JPG

Websites increasingly serve images as WebP to load faster, so "Save image as" often gives you a .webp file that an email program, a document editor or a form then refuses. Converting it to JPG here takes a second and does not upload the picture anywhere.

Transparency and backgrounds

When an image with a transparent background, such as a logo, is converted to JPG, the transparent areas have to become a solid colour. White suits most documents and marketplaces; pick a different colour to match the page it will sit on, or choose PNG or WebP to keep the transparency.

Converting repeatedly loses quality

Each time an image is saved as JPG or WebP, a little detail is lost. Converting back and forth several times makes it visibly worse. Keep your original, and convert from it whenever you need a new copy.

Are my images uploaded?

No. The conversion is done by your browser on your own device, and the images are never sent to our server or anyone else's.

How do I convert WebP to JPG?

Choose your WebP images, keep JPG selected, and download them. Each file is converted as soon as it is added, and several files can be downloaded together as a ZIP.

Will converting to JPG lose quality?

JPG always compresses a little. At the default quality of 90 the difference is not visible in normal photos. Converting to PNG keeps every pixel exactly, but photos saved as PNG are much larger.

What happens to transparent backgrounds?

PNG and WebP keep transparency. JPG cannot store it, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose, white by default.

Can I convert HEIC photos from an iPhone?

Only in Safari on an iPhone, iPad or Mac, because other browsers cannot open HEIC. To avoid HEIC altogether, set the iPhone's Settings, Camera, Formats to Most Compatible, and new photos will be saved as JPG.

Which format should I choose?

JPG for photos and anything you upload to forms or marketplaces. PNG for logos, screenshots and graphics with sharp edges or transparency. WebP for websites, where it gives the smallest files.
