BMP files come from old Windows programs, Paint, scanners and some cameras. They are huge, because the pixels are stored with no compression, and many websites and forms refuse them. Drop your BMP files here, JPG is already chosen, and each becomes a JPG a fraction of the size. Convert a whole folder at once and download the results in a ZIP. Nothing is uploaded.

How it works

BMP to JPG Converter is a web page that does its work on your own device. The file you choose is opened by your browser, changed there and saved from there; it is never sent to a server, so there is no copy of it anywhere to delete, no queue and no waiting for an upload. Most online tools of this kind send your file to their servers and work on it there, and many keep it for a while. This one does not. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on how often you use it, and the result downloads the moment it is ready.

How much smaller the JPG is

A photo saved as BMP often shrinks to a tenth of its size or less as a JPG at the default quality, with no difference you can see. For a screenshot or a drawing with flat colour and sharp text, choose PNG instead: it stays exact and is still far smaller than the BMP.

Questions

Why is my BMP file so large?

BMP stores every pixel as it is, with no compression: a 12-megapixel photo is about 36 MB. JPG and PNG compress the same picture.

Does BMP to JPG keep transparency?

JPG has no transparency, so any transparent parts are filled with the background colour you choose. Most BMP files have none.
