Tip Calculator: Tip, total and each person's share for any bill, with rounding so nobody hunts for coins.

Type the bill, tap a percentage or type your own, and say how many people are sharing: the tip, the total and each person's share appear at once, with a quick-look table of the same bill at 10, 12, 15, 18, 20, 22 and 25 percent. Enter the tax to tip on the amount before it, and round the tip, the total or each share to a whole amount with the real percentage shown. Any currency sign.

How it works

Tip Calculator is a web page that does its work on your own device. Everything you type or choose is worked out by your browser and never sent to a server, so nothing is stored and there is nothing to delete. There is no account, no sign-up and no limit on how often you use it.

How the tip is worked out

The tip is a percentage of the bill: 18% of a $50 bill is $9, for a total of $59, and split four ways that is $14.75 each. Type the bill, pick a percentage or type your own, and set how many people are sharing; the tip, the total and each person's share update as you type, and the quick-look table shows the same bill at the usual percentages so you can compare at a glance. If the bill includes sales tax and you prefer to tip on the food and drink alone, enter the tax and the percentage is applied to the amount before it.

Rounding

Tipping is not accounting, so the calculator can round for you: the tip to a whole amount, the total to a whole amount so the bill comes out even, or each person's share to a whole amount so nobody is hunting for coins. When it rounds, the note below the result says what the tip then works out to as a percentage, so a rounded total does not quietly become a stingy or a lavish tip.

How much to tip

Customs differ by country and by service. In the United States 15 to 20 percent is usual at a restaurant with table service, with 18 and 20 the common defaults, and more for exceptional service; counter service and takeaway are often less or nothing. In much of Europe service is included and a few percent or rounding up is the norm, and in some countries tipping is not expected at all. The buttons cover the usual range; the custom box takes any figure.

What this tool does not do

  • It does not split a bill by what each person ordered; everyone pays the same share.
  • It does not convert currencies; the sign is only how the amounts are shown.

What it does

Questions

How do I calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill by the percentage: 18% of $50 is 50 × 0.18 = $9, so the total is $59. For a quick head estimate, 10% is the bill with the decimal point moved one place, and 20% is double that.

How much should I tip?

In the United States, 15 to 20 percent at a restaurant with table service is usual, with 18 or 20 the common choice and more for excellent service; less or nothing for counter service. Customs differ elsewhere, and in many countries service is included. The buttons cover the usual range and the box takes any figure.

Should I tip on the pre-tax amount?

Either is accepted; tipping on the pre-tax amount is the traditional rule and tipping on the total is simpler and a little more generous. Enter the tax under Tax and rounding to use the pre-tax amount.

How do I split the bill?

Set Split between to the number of people. Each person's share of the total, and of the tip, is shown. Everyone pays the same share; the calculator does not divide by what each person ordered.

What does rounding do?

Round the tip, the total or each share up to a whole amount so the cash comes out even. The note under the result says what percentage the tip then works out to.

Does it work in other currencies?

Yes. Change the currency sign under Tax and rounding; the arithmetic is the same whatever the currency.

Is anything sent anywhere?

No. The sums are done in your browser and nothing is stored.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free, with no sign-up.
