Common questions
How do I calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the percentage: 18% of $50 is 50 × 0.18 = $9, so the total is $59. For a quick head estimate, 10% is the bill with the decimal point moved one place, and 20% is double that.
How much should I tip?
In the United States, 15 to 20 percent at a restaurant with table service is usual, with 18 or 20 the common choice and more for excellent service; less or nothing for counter service. Customs differ elsewhere, and in many countries service is included. The buttons cover the usual range and the box takes any figure.
Should I tip on the pre-tax amount?
Either is accepted; tipping on the pre-tax amount is the traditional rule and tipping on the total is simpler and a little more generous. Enter the tax under Tax and rounding to use the pre-tax amount.
How do I split the bill?
Set Split between to the number of people. Each person's share of the total, and of the tip, is shown. Everyone pays the same share; the calculator does not divide by what each person ordered.
What does rounding do?
Round the tip, the total or each share up to a whole amount so the cash comes out even. The note under the result says what percentage the tip then works out to.
Does it work in other currencies?
Yes. Change the currency sign under Tax and rounding; the arithmetic is the same whatever the currency.
Is anything sent anywhere?
No. The sums are done in your browser and nothing is stored.
Is it free?
Yes, completely free, with no sign-up.
