    How to use Character Counter

Takes about 1 minute. You need the text.

    1. Type or pastePut the text in the box. Every count updates as you type.
    2. Read the limitsEach platform row shows how much of its limit is used, counted its way, and turns red when the text is over.
    3. Fix and copyTrim the text, change its case if you like, and press Copy text.
Character Counter: Characters, words and bytes as you type, checked against the limits that matter, counted the way each platform counts.

Type or paste and read the characters with and without spaces, words, sentences, paragraphs, lines, UTF-8 bytes and reading time, live. Beside the text, every platform limit that matters is checked with its own counting rule: X's 280 with links as 23 and emoji as 2, a text message's 160 or 70 with the number of parts, Etsy, eBay and Amazon title limits, LinkedIn posts and YouTube titles and descriptions, plus any limit of your own. Change the case with one click and copy the text back.

    How it works

Character Counter is a web page that does its work on your own device. Everything you type or choose is worked out by your browser and never sent to a server, so nothing is stored and there is nothing to delete. There is no account, no sign-up and no limit on how often you use it.

Counting the way each platform counts

A character count sounds simple, but the places with limits do not all count the same way. X counts every link as 23 characters whatever its length, and letters from scripts such as Chinese and Japanese, and most emoji, as two (X developer documentation, Counting characters, read 5 October 2026). A text message depends on which alphabet it needs: 160 characters when everything is in the basic GSM set, 70 when a single emoji, curly quote or unusual accented letter forces the 16-bit form, and fewer per part once the message splits into several. This counter applies each platform's own rule to the row for that platform, so the number you see is the number the platform will see.

    The limits shown

X posts are 280 characters for standard accounts. Etsy listing titles are 140 characters, eBay titles 80 and Amazon product titles 75 in most categories, all from the marketplaces' own seller help pages (read 21 September 2026 for the Listing Title Optimizer). LinkedIn posts are 3,000 characters (LinkedIn Help, read 5 October 2026), YouTube titles 100 and descriptions 5,000 (YouTube Help, Upload videos, read 5 October 2026). Page titles and meta descriptions in search results are cut by pixel width rather than by characters, so the 60 and 160 shown are guidelines; the Meta Tag Generator measures them properly. Platforms change limits, so check the source if a number is close.

    The other counts

Words are runs of letters and digits, with apostrophes and hyphens kept inside a word, so "well-known" and "it's" count once each. Sentences end at a full stop, question or exclamation mark; paragraphs are separated by a blank line; lines are counted at every line break. Bytes are what the text takes in UTF-8, which is what a database or a form limit usually means by "characters" when it is stricter than you expect: an accented letter takes two bytes, an emoji four. Reading time assumes 238 words a minute, a common adult reading speed.

What this tool does not do

    • It does not post anywhere or check a specific account's limit; premium accounts on some platforms have higher limits than the ones shown.
    • It does not count characters for Instagram, TikTok or Facebook, whose help pages did not give a figure we could verify; type the limit you know into Your own limit.

    What it does

    • Characters, without spaces, words, sentences, paragraphs, lines, bytes, reading time
    • X post count with links as 23 and wide characters as 2
    • SMS parts: 160 or 70 per text, 153 or 67 per part, with the alphabet explained
    • Etsy, eBay, Amazon title limits; LinkedIn posts; YouTube titles and descriptions
    • Your own limit, and search snippet guidelines
    • UPPER, lower, Title Case and Sentence case, then copy
    • No upload, no account, no sign-up

    Questions

How many characters can an X post have?

280 for a standard account, with every link counted as 23 characters and most emoji and characters from scripts such as Chinese and Japanese counted as 2 (X developer documentation, Counting characters, read 5 October 2026). The X row uses that rule, so it can differ from the plain character count.

How many characters fit in one text message?

160 when every character is in the basic GSM alphabet, which covers English letters, digits and common punctuation; 70 when the message contains anything outside it, such as an emoji or a curly quote, which switches the whole message to 16-bit. Longer messages are split into parts of 153 or 67. The SMS panel says which alphabet your text needs and how many parts it takes.

What are the Etsy, eBay and Amazon title limits?

Etsy listing titles 140 characters, eBay titles 80, Amazon product titles 75 in most categories, from each marketplace's seller help (read 21 September 2026). The Listing Title Optimizer checks a title against each marketplace's other rules too.

What are the LinkedIn and YouTube limits?

LinkedIn posts take up to 3,000 characters (LinkedIn Help, read 5 October 2026). YouTube video titles take 100 characters and descriptions 5,000 (YouTube Help, Upload videos, read 5 October 2026).

Why are page title and meta description marked as guidelines?

Search engines cut them by pixel width, not by character count, so 60 and 160 are rules of thumb. The Meta Tag Generator measures the real width and shows where the cut falls.

    Do spaces count as characters?

Yes, on every platform. The Without spaces count is given for cases, such as some forms and essays, that ask for it.

    Is my text stored?

No. It is counted by code running in your browser and is gone when you close the page. Nothing is sent to us.

    Is it free?

Yes, completely free, with no sign-up.
