How to use X and Twitter Character Counter

Takes about 1 minute. You need the text.

    1. Type or pastePut the text in the box. Every count updates as you type.
    2. Read the limitsEach platform row shows how much of its limit is used, counted its way, and turns red when the text is over.
    3. Fix and copyTrim the text, change its case if you like, and press Copy text.
Character Counter: Characters, words and bytes as you type, checked against the limits that matter, counted the way each platform counts.

Type or paste the post and watch the X row: 280 characters for a standard account, counted X's way, with every link as 23 characters however long it is and emoji and characters from scripts such as Chinese and Japanese as 2, as X's developer documentation sets out. The row turns red when the post is over, and the plain character count is shown beside it so you can see the difference.

    How it works

X and Twitter Character Counter is a web page that does its work on your own device. Everything you type or choose is worked out by your browser and never sent to a server, so nothing is stored and there is nothing to delete. There is no account, no sign-up and no limit on how often you use it.

Why a link counts as 23

X shortens every link to its own t.co address, which is 23 characters, so a long address costs no more than a short one and a short one costs no less.

    Questions

Does a premium account get more?

Yes, subscribers can post much longer text. The 280 limit here is for standard accounts, which is what most readers see in full without a Show more.
