How to use SMS Length Calculator
- Type or pastePut the text in the box. Every count updates as you type.
- Read the limitsEach platform row shows how much of its limit is used, counted its way, and turns red when the text is over.
- Fix and copyTrim the text, change its case if you like, and press Copy text.
Type the message and read how many SMS parts it takes and how many characters are left. The basic GSM alphabet holds 160 characters in one text and 153 in each part of a longer one; a single character outside it, an emoji, a curly quote or an accented letter the set lacks, switches the whole message to 16-bit, 70 in one text and 67 per part. Marketing and alert messages are billed per part, so the difference costs money.
How it works
SMS Length Calculator is a web page that does its work on your own device. Everything you type or choose is worked out by your browser and never sent to a server, so nothing is stored and there is nothing to delete. There is no account, no sign-up and no limit on how often you use it.
Keeping a message to one part
Replace curly quotes with straight ones, drop emoji, and watch for characters that count double in the basic alphabet: the euro sign, square brackets, braces, backslash, tilde, caret and vertical bar each take two.
Questions
Why does my message say 70 when it is in English?
One character outside the basic alphabet is enough, usually a curly apostrophe or quote pasted from a word processor, an en dash or an emoji. Retype it with a straight quote or a hyphen and the limit returns to 160.
