What makes a good slug
The slug is the part of a web address after the last slash: in example.com/blog/wedding-card-ideas it is wedding-card-ideas. Search engines read it, people see it in results and in shared links, and it should stay the same for the life of the page. A good one is short, lowercase, made of plain letters and numbers joined by hyphens, and says what the page is about in three to six words. This generator does that from any title as you type, one line or a whole list at once.
Hindi, Gujarati and other Indian scripts
A title in Hindi or Gujarati makes a web address full of percent codes when it is copied, so most Indian sites use a Latin-letter slug. The generator spells Devanagari, Gujarati, Bengali, Gurmukhi, Odia, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam in plain Latin letters the way people type them, dropping the silent a the way Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali and Punjabi speakers do: भारत की राजधानी becomes bharat-ki-rajdhani and નમસ્તે becomes namaste. Spelling by sound has limits, so read the result and adjust a word if your audience spells it differently. Russian, Ukrainian and Greek letters are written in Latin too, and accents are removed: Crème Brûlée becomes creme-brulee.
Options
Choose hyphens, underscores, dots or nothing between words; hyphens are what search engines treat as word breaks. Remove small words such as the, of and and for a shorter address. Cap the length and the slug is cut at a word boundary. Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Arabic and other scripts have no single Latin spelling, so they are kept as they are, which modern browsers show correctly, or dropped if you prefer.
What this tool does not do
- It does not translate; a Hindi title becomes Hindi words in Latin letters, not English.
- It does not check whether a slug is already used on your site.
What it does
- Slug as you type, with its length
- Hindi, Gujarati and eight other Indian scripts in Latin letters
- Accents removed; Russian, Ukrainian and Greek spelt in Latin
- Hyphen, underscore, dot or no separator
- Remove small words, cap the length at a word boundary
- Many titles at once, one slug per line, copy all
- No upload, no account, no sign-up
Questions
What is a URL slug?
The readable part of a web address that names the page, after the last slash: in example.com/blog/wedding-card-ideas the slug is wedding-card-ideas.
Hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens. Search engines treat a hyphen as a space between words, while an underscore can join the words into one.
How long should a slug be?
Short enough to read at a glance: three to six words, well under 75 characters. Set a maximum length and the slug is cut at the last whole word.
Can it make a slug from a Hindi or Gujarati title?
Yes. Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Odia are spelt in Latin letters by sound, with the silent a dropped as speakers do: भारत की राजधानी becomes bharat-ki-rajdhani. Read it once, since spelling by sound can differ from the spelling your readers expect.
Does it translate the title into English?
No. It writes the same words in Latin letters. For an English slug, type the English title.
What happens to Chinese, Japanese or Arabic titles?
They have no single Latin spelling, so by default they are kept as Unicode letters, which browsers display correctly. Choose Drop them to keep the slug to Latin letters only.
Should I remove words like the and of?
It makes addresses shorter and is common practice, but keep them when they change the meaning. The option is off by default.
Should I change a slug after the page is live?
Avoid it: links and search rankings point at the old address. If you must, set up a 301 redirect from the old slug to the new one.
Is it free?
Yes, completely free, with no sign-up.
