Common questions

What is a URL slug?

The readable part of a web address that names the page, after the last slash: in example.com/blog/wedding-card-ideas the slug is wedding-card-ideas.

Hyphens or underscores?

Hyphens. Search engines treat a hyphen as a space between words, while an underscore can join the words into one.

How long should a slug be?

Short enough to read at a glance: three to six words, well under 75 characters. Set a maximum length and the slug is cut at the last whole word.

Can it make a slug from a Hindi or Gujarati title?

Yes. Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Odia are spelt in Latin letters by sound, with the silent a dropped as speakers do: भारत की राजधानी becomes bharat-ki-rajdhani. Read it once, since spelling by sound can differ from the spelling your readers expect.

Does it translate the title into English?

No. It writes the same words in Latin letters. For an English slug, type the English title.

What happens to Chinese, Japanese or Arabic titles?

They have no single Latin spelling, so by default they are kept as Unicode letters, which browsers display correctly. Choose Drop them to keep the slug to Latin letters only.

Should I remove words like the and of?

It makes addresses shorter and is common practice, but keep them when they change the meaning. The option is off by default.

Should I change a slug after the page is live?

Avoid it: links and search rankings point at the old address. If you must, set up a 301 redirect from the old slug to the new one.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free, with no sign-up.
