Lorem Ipsum Generator

Pick how many paragraphs, sentences, words, list items or characters you need and the placeholder text appears at once, freshly mixed from the classic lorem ipsum vocabulary and opening with Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet unless you switch that off. Choose short, medium or long paragraphs, get it as plain text, HTML paragraphs or a list, or Markdown, see the word and character count, then copy it or download it as a file.

How it works

Lorem Ipsum Generator is a web page that does its work on your own device. Everything you type or choose is worked out by your browser and never sent to a server, so nothing is stored and there is nothing to delete. There is no account, no sign-up and no limit on how often you use it.

Straight to one job

Dummy Text Generator

Placeholder text, ready to paste

Lorem ipsum is the scrambled Latin that designers, printers and developers have used as filler for centuries, because it looks like real text without pulling the eye to what it says. It shows how a layout, a font or a card holds a paragraph before the real copy is written. This generator makes as much as you need, in paragraphs, sentences, words, list items or roughly a number of characters, and gives it to you as plain text, HTML paragraphs or a list, or Markdown.

Where it comes from

The text is a jumbled passage from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC, and has been used as type-setting filler since at least the sixteenth century. It begins with Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet by convention; untick the option to start anywhere. Each batch is freshly mixed from the classic vocabulary, so repeated blocks do not look copied and pasted.

Sizes that match the job

For a business card or a product tile, ask for one short paragraph or a few words. For a blog layout, three to five medium paragraphs. For a field with a limit, such as a meta description of about 155 characters, pick Characters and the text stops at the last whole word under that count. The counter above the text shows words and characters as you go.

What this tool does not do

• It does not write real copy; use it only until the real words arrive.
• It does not make text in other languages; lorem ipsum is pseudo-Latin by design.

Questions

What is lorem ipsum?

Placeholder text: a scrambled passage of Latin from Cicero, used by designers and printers since the 1500s so a layout can be judged without the words distracting anyone.

What does lorem ipsum mean?

Nothing as a whole. The words come from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, around 'dolorem ipsum', 'pain itself', but they are cut and mixed so the text reads as nonsense.

Can I get it as HTML?

Yes. Choose HTML and paragraphs come wrapped in <p> tags, and list items in a <ul> list, ready to paste into a page or a template.

How do I get a set number of characters?

Choose Characters and type the number. The text stops at the last whole word under it, which is handy for testing a field limit such as a 155-character meta description.

Can I turn off the Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet start?

Yes. Untick the option and the text starts with a random sentence.

Is there a limit?

Up to 100 paragraphs, 500 sentences, 5,000 words, 200 list items or 50,000 characters per batch; click New text for more.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free, with no sign-up.
