Common questions

What is lorem ipsum?

Placeholder text: a scrambled passage of Latin from Cicero, used by designers and printers since the 1500s so a layout can be judged without the words distracting anyone.

What does lorem ipsum mean?

Nothing as a whole. The words come from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, around 'dolorem ipsum', 'pain itself', but they are cut and mixed so the text reads as nonsense.

Can I get it as HTML?

Yes. Choose HTML and paragraphs come wrapped in <p> tags, and list items in a <ul> list, ready to paste into a page or a template.

How do I get a set number of characters?

Choose Characters and type the number. The text stops at the last whole word under it, which is handy for testing a field limit such as a 155-character meta description.

Can I turn off the Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet start?

Yes. Untick the option and the text starts with a random sentence.

Is there a limit?

Up to 100 paragraphs, 500 sentences, 5,000 words, 200 list items or 50,000 characters per batch; click New text for more.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free, with no sign-up.
