How it works

Compress Image is a web page that does its work on your own device. The file you choose is opened by your browser, changed there and saved from there; it is never sent to a server, so there is no copy of it anywhere to delete, no queue and no waiting for an upload. Most online tools of this kind send your file to their servers and work on it there, and many keep it for a while. This one does not. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on how often you use it, and the result downloads the moment it is ready.

Compressing to an exact size

Most compressors ask you to pick "low, medium or high" and hope the result is small enough. Upload forms do not work like that. An exam portal that allows 50 KB rejects a 51 KB photo, however good it looks. This tool works the other way round: you give it the limit, and it searches for the highest quality that still fits under it, so you never throw away more detail than you have to.

It tries quality first, because a slightly softer photo at full size usually looks better than a sharp photo at half the size. Only when the limit cannot be met that way does it reduce the width and height, a little at a time. If your form demands exact dimensions, such as 200 × 230 pixels, tick Keep the exact width and height and only the quality will change.

Common limits

• Exam and job application photos: often around 20 to 50 KB, JPG.
• Signatures: often around 10 to 20 KB, JPG.
• Scanned documents for government and bank portals: often 100 to 300 KB.
• Email attachments and chat apps: 500 KB to 1 MB keeps photos clear and quick to send.

Limits differ between forms and change from year to year, so check the notice for your own application. A KB here means 1,000 bytes, which is slightly stricter than 1,024, so the file is accepted whichever way the website counts.

JPG or WebP

Choose JPG for forms and anything official: every website and program accepts it. WebP makes files around a quarter smaller at the same quality and keeps transparency, which suits websites and online shops, but some upload forms still refuse it.

Private by design

ID photos, signatures and scanned documents are exactly the files you should not upload to a stranger's server. Here the compression runs in your own browser. Phone photos also carry hidden data, such as the GPS location where the photo was taken; the compressed file is created from the picture alone, so that data is left behind.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Compression is done by your browser on your own device. Your photos are never sent to our server or anyone else's, which matters for ID photos, signatures and documents.

How do I compress a photo to under 50 KB?

Choose your photo, keep Target size selected, and pick 50 KB or type any size. The tool finds the best quality that fits under that size and shows the final size before you download.

How do I reduce photo size in KB on my phone?

Open this page in your phone’s browser, choose the photo from your gallery and pick a size such as 50 KB. The smaller photo downloads to your phone, and nothing is uploaded.

Does it change my photo's width and height?

Only if it has to. By default it first lowers the compression quality, and only reduces the dimensions when the target cannot be reached otherwise. If a form requires exact dimensions, tick Keep the exact width and height.

Why is the file a little smaller than my target?

Compression works in steps, so the result lands just under the target rather than exactly on it. The tool also counts 1 KB as 1,000 bytes, so the file passes whether a website counts 1,000 or 1,024 bytes per KB.

What if my photo is already smaller than the target?

If it is already the right format and under the target, it is left exactly as it is, with no loss of quality.

Can I compress a PNG?

Yes. PNG files are saved as JPG or WebP, which are far smaller for photos. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas become white; choose WebP to keep transparency.

What sizes do exam and job application forms ask for?

Many Indian exam forms, such as SSC, UPSC, IBPS and NEET, ask for a photo of roughly 20 to 50 KB and a signature of roughly 10 to 20 KB, in JPG. Limits change, so always check the exact figures in your own form's notice.

Is my location data removed?

Yes. Photos from phones often contain hidden GPS location and camera details. The compressed image is created fresh from the picture, so none of that data is copied into it.

Can it also set the photo size in pixels or cm for a form?
