How to use Listing Title Optimizer
- Choose the marketplacePick Etsy, eBay or Amazon. The limit and the rules change with it.
- Paste or build the titlePaste a title into the box, or open Build a title from its parts and fill in the brand, type, colour and size.
- Fix what it finds and copyRead the checks, add the words shoppers type to see where they sit, press Tidy it up for the safe fixes, then copy the title.
Paste a listing title, pick the marketplace, and see at once what would get it cut, refused or overlooked. The rules are each marketplace's own, from its published guidance: Etsy's 140 characters and fewer than 15 words, eBay's 80 characters that it asks you to fill, and Amazon's 75 characters, banned symbols, two-uses-per-word limit and no promotional or subjective phrases. The tool counts characters and words against the limit, marks the part a search engine shows first, finds words in all capitals, words used too often, decorative symbols, phrases like free shipping or best seller, and stray spaces, then scores the title out of 100. Type the words a shopper would search and it shows whether each one is in the title and early enough to be seen. Tidy it up fixes the safe things in one press, and Build a title from its parts puts brand, type, colour and size in the order that marketplace recommends. Everything happens in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere.
How it works
Listing Title Optimizer is a web page that does its work on your own device. Everything you type or choose is worked out by your browser and never sent to a server, so nothing is stored and there is nothing to delete. There is no account, no sign-up and no limit on how often you use it.

What each marketplace asks for
The checks follow what the three marketplaces publish themselves, read on 21 September 2026. Rules change, so the source is named here for you to check.
- Etsy (How to Create a Listing): up to 140 characters; consider fewer than 15 words; clearly state what the item is and its key details; avoid repetition and subjective words such as "perfect"; no need for price or shipping; holidays, occasions and recipient types only if they are essential to what the item is. Etsy's SEO guidance adds that search engines show only the first 50 to 60 characters of a page title, so the most important traits go first.
- eBay (Create great listings): 80 characters, and use as many as you can; include the brand, model or type, colour, style and model number; avoid special characters and irrelevant words.
- Amazon (Product title requirements and guidelines): no more than 75 characters including spaces; no promotional phrases; none of ! $ ? _ { } ^ ¬ ¦ and no decorative symbols; the same word no more than twice, apart from prepositions, articles and conjunctions; no all capitals; numerals rather than words; and the order brand, flavour or style, product type, key attribute, colour, size or pack count, model number. A title that breaks the requirements can be corrected automatically or left out of search results.
How the score works
Every title starts at 100. Each thing the marketplace would refuse or cut takes 25 off, each thing its guidance asks you to avoid takes 10, and each small point takes 3. The score is a checklist against published rules, not a forecast of sales or a measure of search ranking; a title can score 100 and still describe the wrong thing. Read it aloud once. If it sounds like something a person would say, it is close.
Writing a title shoppers find
- Lead with what it is. "Ceramic coffee mug" before "hand painted". The first words are the ones every screen shows.
- Use the shopper's words, not yours. Nobody searches for "artisan vessel". Type the phrases you would search for into the keywords box and make sure each one is there once.
- Once is enough. Repeating a word does not rank it higher, and Amazon refuses it.
- Details beat adjectives. Colour, material, size, quantity and model number are searched for; "beautiful" is not.
- Keep the sale talk for the description. "Free shipping" and "best seller" are against Amazon's rules and wasted characters everywhere else.
What this tool does not do
- It does not look up how often a word is searched, or what competitors use. Nothing is fetched from any marketplace.
- It does not know your category's own style guide. Amazon and eBay publish extra guidance for some categories, and that takes precedence.
- It cannot promise a title will be accepted or rank well. It can only tell you it breaks no published rule.
What it does
- Etsy, eBay and Amazon rules, taken from each marketplace's own published guidance
- Live character and word count against the limit, and the part a search engine shows first
- Finds all-caps words, words used more than twice, banned and decorative characters
- Flags promotional and subjective phrases such as free shipping, best seller or perfect
- Checks that the words shoppers type are in the title, and early enough to be seen
- Tidy it up fixes spacing, symbols, capitals and promotional phrases in one press
- Builds a title from brand, type, colour, size and model in the order each marketplace recommends
- Shows how the title reads in a two-line search result on a phone
- The same title checked against all three limits at once
- No sign-up, and nothing you type is sent anywhere
Questions
Where do the rules come from?
From the marketplaces themselves: Etsy's Help Center article "How to Create a Listing" and its guidance on search engine optimization, eBay's Seller Center page "Create great listings", and Amazon Seller Central's "Product title requirements and guidelines". They were read on 21 September 2026. The tool quotes or closely follows them and adds no limits of its own.
How long can an Etsy title be?
Up to 140 characters. Etsy also suggests using fewer than 15 words, stating clearly what the item is with its key details, avoiding repetition and subjective words such as "perfect", leaving price and shipping out, and mentioning a holiday, occasion or recipient only if it is essential to what the item is.
How long can an eBay title be?
80 characters, and eBay's advice is to use as many of them as you can. Its Seller Center suggests the brand, model or type, colour, style and model number, and says to avoid special characters and irrelevant words.
How long can an Amazon title be?
75 characters, including spaces, for all product types except media. Amazon does not allow promotional phrases, the characters ! $ ? _ { } ^ ¬ ¦, decorative symbols, all capitals, or the same word more than twice, apart from words like and, of and with. It asks for a capital at the start of each word, numerals rather than spelled-out numbers, and this order: brand, flavour or style, product type, key attribute, colour, size or pack count, model number. Details that no longer fit can go in the separate item highlights field.
What does the score mean?
It starts at 100 and drops for each thing found: 25 for something the marketplace refuses or cuts, 10 for something its guidance asks you to avoid, and 3 for a small point. It is a checklist, not a prediction of sales or of search ranking.
Why does it highlight the first 60 characters?
Etsy's own SEO guidance says search engines show only the first 50 to 60 characters of a page title, so the most important words belong there. The same is true wherever a title becomes a page title. The two-line preview shows the other cut: a phone screen.
What does Tidy it up change?
Only the safe things: extra spaces, decorative symbols and repeated punctuation, words in all capitals, and promotional phrases such as free shipping. For Amazon it also removes the banned characters and capitalises each word. It never reorders or rewrites your words, so read the result once before you use it.
Does it check whether a keyword is popular?
No. It checks that the words you give it are in the title and where they sit. Nothing is fetched from any marketplace, and no search data is involved.
Does it work for other sites?
The three sets of rules are Etsy's, eBay's and Amazon's. For another marketplace, use the one whose limit is closest and check that site's own guidance for the rest. The checks for capitals, repetition, symbols and promotional words apply almost everywhere.
Is FreeMicroTools affiliated with Etsy, eBay or Amazon?
