DDS is the texture format of most PC games and their mods, and ordinary image viewers cannot open it. Drop your DDS files here, PNG is already chosen, and each texture is decoded and saved as a PNG you can edit in any program: BC1 (DXT1), BC2 (DXT3), BC3 (DXT5), BC4, BC5 normal maps and BC7, plus uncompressed textures. Alpha is kept. The largest mip level is used. Nothing is uploaded.
How it works
DDS to PNG Converter is a web page that does its work on your own device. The file you choose is opened by your browser, changed there and saved from there; it is never sent to a server, so there is no copy of it anywhere to delete, no queue and no waiting for an upload. Most online tools of this kind send your file to their servers and work on it there, and many keep it for a while. This one does not. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on how often you use it, and the result downloads the moment it is ready.
Normal maps and BC5
BC5 stores only two channels of a normal map. The third is worked out from them so the PNG looks the way texture tools show it. For modding, edit the PNG, then turn it back into a texture with PNG to DDS.
Questions
Can it open BC7 textures?
Yes. BC7, used by most games since about 2015, opens along with the older DXT formats. HDR textures (BC6H) are the exception, because they have no single look as a normal picture.
