How to use Unlock PDF

Takes about 1 minute. You need a locked PDF and the password that opens it.

  1. Choose your PDFPress Choose a PDF file or drop the PDF into the box. It is checked on your device and not uploaded.
  2. Type the passwordIf the PDF needs a password to open, type it. A PDF that opens freely but is restricted needs none.
  3. Save the unlocked copyPress Remove the password. The copy downloads and opens anywhere; your original is not changed.
Unlock PDF: Remove the password from a PDF you are allowed to open, without uploading it.

Drop in a locked PDF, type the password you open it with, and save a copy that opens anywhere with no password at all. A PDF that opens freely but will not let you print, copy or edit is unlocked too, without any password. The file is rebuilt on your own device with its text, pictures, links and form fields exactly as they were. Neither the PDF nor the password is ever sent anywhere.

How it works

Unlock PDF is a web page that does its work on your own device. The file you choose is opened by your browser, changed there and saved from there; it is never sent to a server, so there is no copy of it anywhere to delete, no queue and no waiting for an upload. Most online tools of this kind send your file to their servers and work on it there, and many keep it for a while. This one does not. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on how often you use it, and the result downloads the moment it is ready.

Straight to one job

Two kinds of locked PDF

A PDF can be locked in two ways. The first asks for a password before it opens at all: bank statements, pay slips, insurance documents and e-Aadhaar letters often arrive like this, with the password sent separately or made from your details. The second opens freely but stops you printing, copying text or filling in fields: the owner set restrictions and kept the permissions password. This tool handles both. For the first you type the password you were given; for the second nothing is needed, because the restrictions are only a request to PDF readers, not a lock on the content.

What happens to the file

The PDF is decrypted on your device and written out again with no encryption. Every page, picture, link, bookmark and form field is copied as it was; nothing is redrawn and nothing is compressed, so the unlocked copy looks identical and is about the same size. Your original file is not changed.

Using it responsibly

Unlock only PDFs you are entitled to open: your own documents, or ones whose owner has given you the password. This tool cannot guess or crack a password, and it does not try. If you have lost the password to your own file, the sender or the service that issued it is the place to ask.

What this tool does not do

  • It does not recover forgotten passwords.
  • It does not remove digital signatures, watermarks or redactions; those are part of the page, not the lock.
  • It does not open PDFs protected by a rights-management server rather than a password.

What it does

  • Removes the password from a PDF you know the password for
  • Lifts printing, copying and editing restrictions from PDFs that open freely
  • Every kind of PDF encryption, from the oldest to AES-256
  • Pages, text, links, bookmarks and form fields kept exactly as they were
  • Tells you whether the PDF needs a password or is only restricted
  • The file and the password never leave your device

Questions

Is my PDF or my password uploaded?

No. The PDF is checked and unlocked by a program that runs inside your browser on your own device. Neither the file nor the password is sent to us or to anyone else, and nothing is stored.

How do I remove a password from a PDF?

Drop the PDF in, type the password you open it with, and press Remove the password. The copy that downloads opens with no password in any reader.

Can it unlock a PDF without the password?

Only when the PDF opens freely and is merely restricted from printing, copying or editing: those limits are removed without any password. A PDF that asks for a password before it opens needs that password; this tool does not guess or crack passwords.

How do I open my e-Aadhaar PDF without the password every time?

The e-Aadhaar password is the first four letters of your name in capitals followed by your year of birth, such as RAHU1988. Type it here once and save the unlocked copy, which opens without it. Keep that copy somewhere private, since it is no longer protected.

Will the unlocked PDF look the same?

Yes. Pages are copied as they are, not redrawn, so text stays sharp and searchable and links, bookmarks and form fields keep working. The file is about the same size.

Which kinds of encryption does it handle?

All the standard PDF ones: the older 40-bit and 128-bit RC4, AES-128 and AES-256, with any permission settings. PDFs locked to a rights-management server rather than a password cannot be opened.

Is this legal?

Removing the password from a document you are allowed to open, such as your own statements or files a sender gave you the password for, is ordinary use of your own documents. Do not use it on files you are not entitled to open.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit.
