Type how much you invest each month, the yearly return you expect and the number of years to see the total invested, the estimated returns and the final value, with a year-by-year table and a bar showing how much of the end value is your money and how much is growth. Raise the SIP every year with a step-up percentage, or switch to a one-time lump sum. Figures are in rupees, in lakhs and crores, and follow the convention fund houses use.

How it works

SIP Calculator is a web page that does its work on your own device. Everything you type or choose is worked out by your browser and never sent to a server, so nothing is stored and there is nothing to delete. There is no account, no sign-up and no limit on how often you use it.

What a monthly SIP could grow to

A SIP, a systematic investment plan, puts a fixed amount into a mutual fund every month. Type the monthly amount, the yearly return you expect and the number of years, and the page shows what you will have put in, the estimated value at the end and the returns in between, with a year-by-year table so you can see the growth speed up as returns start earning returns of their own. ₹10,000 a month for 10 years at 12% comes to about ₹23.2 lakh on ₹12 lakh invested.

Step-up SIP and lump sum

Most people earn more each year, so a step-up SIP raises the monthly amount by a fixed percentage every year; with a 10% step-up the same plan grows to about ₹33.7 lakh. Switch to Lump sum to see what a one-time investment grows to with yearly compounding, which is how a single investment in a fund or a fixed deposit is usually compared.

How it is worked out

Each instalment is treated as invested at the start of its month and growing at one twelfth of the yearly return each month, which is the convention most fund houses and Indian SIP calculators use, so the figures match theirs. Real returns vary from year to year and can be negative; the result is an illustration of compounding, not a forecast. Past returns of a fund do not promise future ones, and mutual fund investments are subject to market risks.

What this tool does not do

  • It does not account for expense ratios, exit loads or tax on gains.
  • It does not adjust for inflation; ₹23 lakh in ten years will buy less than it does today.
  • It does not recommend a fund or a return; that is a question for a registered adviser.

What it does

  • Monthly SIP value, amount invested and estimated returns
  • Step-up SIP: raise the amount by a percentage every year
  • Lump sum mode for a one-time investment
  • Year-by-year table of invested amount and value
  • Rupees in lakhs and crores
  • Same method as fund-house SIP calculators
  • No account, no sign-up

Questions

How is SIP return calculated?

Each monthly instalment is treated as invested at the start of the month and grows at one twelfth of the yearly return every month until the end. The values of all instalments are added up. This is the method most fund houses' calculators use.

What will ₹10,000 a month become in 10 years?

At 12% a year, about ₹23.2 lakh on ₹12 lakh invested. At 10% it is about ₹20.7 lakh. Type your own numbers to compare.

What is a step-up SIP?

A SIP whose monthly amount rises by a set percentage every year, usually in line with your income. With a 10% step-up, ₹10,000 a month for 10 years at 12% grows to about ₹33.7 lakh.

What return should I expect?

No one can promise one. Equity funds have returned more than debt funds over long periods, but with large ups and downs. Try a few rates to see the range, and ask a registered adviser for advice.

Is SIP better than a lump sum?

A SIP spreads your buying over time, which smooths out market swings and fits a monthly salary. A lump sum invested earlier has longer to grow. Switch modes to compare the same total either way.

Does it include tax or fund charges?

No. Expense ratios are already reflected in a fund's reported returns; capital gains tax and exit loads are not included.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free, with no sign-up.
