How to use SHA-256 Generator

Takes about 1 minute. You need text or a file, and the hash to check against if you have one.

  1. Type or dropPut the text in the box or drop the file on it. Every hash appears in a moment.
  2. ComparePaste the hash from the download page or the sender into Compare with. The matching row turns green, or the tool says there is no match.
  3. CopyPress Copy beside the hash you need; tick Upper case if that is how it should be written.
Hash Generator: Every common hash of a text or a file at once, with a match check against the hash you were given.

Type text or drop a file and read its SHA-256 at the top of the list, with the other common hashes below it. Paste a SHA-256 you were given to check the file matches. SHA-256 is the hash to use for anything new: fast, supported everywhere and with no known collisions. Everything is computed by your browser; nothing is uploaded.

How it works

SHA-256 Generator is a web page that does its work on your own device. The file you choose is opened by your browser, changed there and saved from there; it is never sent to a server, so there is no copy of it anywhere to delete, no queue and no waiting for an upload. Most online tools of this kind send your file to their servers and work on it there, and many keep it for a while. This one does not. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on how often you use it, and the result downloads the moment it is ready.

SHA-256 in practice

Software downloads, container images, blockchain blocks and certificate fingerprints all use SHA-256. It produces 64 hexadecimal characters, 256 bits, whatever the size of the input.

Questions

Is SHA-256 reversible?

No. A hash cannot be turned back into the data; it can only be recomputed from the data and compared.
