How to use MD5 Generator

Takes about 1 minute. You need text or a file, and the hash to check against if you have one.

  1. Type or dropPut the text in the box or drop the file on it. Every hash appears in a moment.
  2. ComparePaste the hash from the download page or the sender into Compare with. The matching row turns green, or the tool says there is no match.
  3. CopyPress Copy beside the hash you need; tick Upper case if that is how it should be written.
Hash Generator: Every common hash of a text or a file at once, with a match check against the hash you were given.

Type text or drop a file and read its MD5 at the top, with SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512 and CRC-32 below. Paste the MD5 printed on a download page or sent with a file to confirm it matches. MD5 is still widely printed for checking that a file was not corrupted in transfer; for proving a file was not tampered with, use the SHA-256 row.

How it works

MD5 Generator is a web page that does its work on your own device. The file you choose is opened by your browser, changed there and saved from there; it is never sent to a server, so there is no copy of it anywhere to delete, no queue and no waiting for an upload. Most online tools of this kind send your file to their servers and work on it there, and many keep it for a while. This one does not. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on how often you use it, and the result downloads the moment it is ready.

MD5 today

MD5 is 32 hexadecimal characters, 128 bits. Collisions can be made on purpose, so it is no longer used for signatures or passwords, but it remains common for checksums, deduplication and cache keys where the data is not hostile.

Questions

Why does the MD5 of my text differ from an online example?

Almost always a trailing newline or different line endings. Hash exactly the bytes the example hashed; the note under the box says when the text ends with a line break.
