Fraction Calculator: Add, subtract, multiply, divide and simplify fractions and mixed numbers, with the steps shown.

The page starts with 2 1/3 + 1 3/4. Each mixed number becomes an improper fraction first, 7/3 and 7/4, then the two are put over a common denominator, 12, and added: 28/12 + 21/12 = 49/12, which is 4 1/12. Type your own with a space between the whole number and the fraction.

    How it works

Mixed Number Calculator is a web page that does its work on your own device. Everything you type or choose is worked out by your browser and never sent to a server, so nothing is stored and there is nothing to delete. There is no account, no sign-up and no limit on how often you use it.

Why turn mixed numbers into improper fractions?

    Multiplying or dividing the whole numbers and fractions separately gives the wrong answer: 2 1/2 × 2 1/2 is 6 1/4, not 4 1/4. Converting first, 5/2 × 5/2 = 25/4, avoids the trap.
