How to use CSV to JSON Converter
- Add your CSVPaste the rows into the box, or press Open a file and choose a .csv or .tsv file.
- Choose the JSON shapeKeep List of objects for most uses, or choose JSON Lines or List of rows. Tick Nest dotted names to build nested objects.
- Download or copyPress Download JSON, or Copy to paste the JSON into your code.
Paste rows copied from a spreadsheet or open a CSV file, and get JSON ready for an API, a web app or a test fixture. The first row becomes the keys of each object, numbers and true or false become real JSON values while ZIP codes and phone numbers keep their leading zeros, and the separator is detected for you, whether commas, semicolons, tabs or pipes. Choose a list of objects, JSON Lines or a plain list of rows, and turn dotted column names such as address.city into nested objects if you like. Nothing leaves your browser.
How it works
CSV to JSON Converter is a web page that does its work on your own device. The file you choose is opened by your browser, changed there and saved from there; it is never sent to a server, so there is no copy of it anywhere to delete, no queue and no waiting for an upload. Most online tools of this kind send your file to their servers and work on it there, and many keep it for a while. This one does not. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on how often you use it, and the result downloads the moment it is ready.
Quotes, commas and line breaks inside cells
Cells wrapped in double quotes may contain commas, line breaks and quotes written twice, as spreadsheets save them. They are read as one value, so an address with a comma stays in one field.
When numbers should stay text
Values such as 02108 or long IDs look like numbers but lose meaning as numbers, so they are kept as text. Untick Numbers and true/false as values to keep every value as text.
Questions
How do I convert Excel to JSON?
In Excel, save the sheet as CSV UTF-8, then open that CSV here and download the JSON. You can also copy the cells in Excel and paste them straight into the box; they arrive as tab-separated text, which is detected.
What if my CSV uses semicolons?
The separator is detected from the first lines, so semicolon, tab and pipe files work without changes. You can also choose the separator yourself.
What if my file has no header row?
Untick First row is column names. Each row then becomes a list of values instead of an object.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The CSV is read in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
