A 4 × 6 inch print is 3 units by 2, while most phone photos are 4 by 3, so a print shop crops a slice off the long sides unless you choose the crop yourself. This page opens with the 3:2 shape already chosen: the box is the largest 3:2 area that fits, and you drag it to keep the faces in. Press Swap to portrait for a 6 × 4 upright print. The photo never leaves your browser.

How it works

Crop Photo to 4x6 is a web page that does its work on your own device. The file you choose is opened by your browser, changed there and saved from there; it is never sent to a server, so there is no copy of it anywhere to delete, no queue and no waiting for an upload. Most online tools of this kind send your file to their servers and work on it there, and many keep it for a while. This one does not. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on how often you use it, and the result downloads the moment it is ready.

How many pixels a sharp 4 × 6 needs

Photo printers work at about 300 pixels per inch, so a 4 × 6 print looks its best from a crop of 1,800 × 1,200 pixels or more; 1,200 × 800 still prints acceptably. The pixel size of your crop is shown under the picture, and the DPI Checker gives a verdict for any print size.

Questions

Does this also work for 8 × 12 and 6 × 4?

Yes. 8 × 12 inches is the same 3:2 shape, so the same crop prints at either size; only the pixel count decides how sharp it is. Press Swap to portrait for an upright 6 × 4 or 12 × 8.

What about 5 × 7 and 8 × 10 prints?

Those are different shapes. Press Custom and type 5 and 7, or 8 and 10, and the box keeps that shape instead.
