Common questions
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The photo is opened and cropped by your browser on your own device. It is never sent to us or to anyone else, and nothing is stored.
Does cropping reduce the quality?
The pixels inside the crop are kept exactly as they were; nothing is resized. Saving as JPG or WebP re-encodes the picture, which at the default quality of 92 is not visible; choose PNG when the picture must be identical, for example a screenshot or a logo.
How do I crop a photo to a square?
Press 1:1. The box becomes the largest square that fits and stays square while you move or resize it. Square crops suit profile pictures and marketplace listing thumbnails.
Which shape is 4:5 for?
4:5 is the tallest portrait shape most social apps show in a feed without cutting the sides. 16:9 is a widescreen video frame or slide; 3:2 is the shape of a 4 × 6 inch print and most camera photos; 4:3 is most phone photos; A4 matches a sheet of paper.
Can I crop to exact pixels?
Yes. Type the Width and Height, and the Left and Top of the crop, in pixels of the original image. With a shape chosen, changing one side changes the other to keep the shape.
Can I crop to a size in inches or centimetres?
Crop to the shape first, for example 3:2 for a 4 × 6 inch print or 5:7 as a custom ratio, then the print size is a matter of resolution. Our DPI Checker shows whether the crop has enough pixels for the print size you want, and the Passport Photo Maker crops to exact millimetre sizes for photos on forms.
Why does the photo open the right way up when other tools turn it sideways?
Phone photos carry a note saying which way up they were taken, and the browser applies it before the picture is shown. The crop is saved the way you see it, without the note, so it stays the right way up everywhere.
Can I crop several photos at once?
One at a time. Each crop is placed by hand, so batches do not fit here. For resizing many photos to a size, use Image Resizer; for many photos under a KB limit, use Compress Image.
Can I crop a circle?
Not here. The Profile Picture Maker crops a photo into a circle with a transparent background.
Is it free?
Yes, completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit.
Nothing happens when I pick a file
The tool runs entirely in your browser, so a very old browser can fail silently. Try the current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. Your files are never uploaded anywhere.
