How to use UUID v4 Generator

Takes about 1 minute. You need nothing.

  1. Pick the versionVersion 4 for a random id, 7 for ids that sort by time, or 5 with a namespace and name for an id that is always the same.
  2. Set the count and formatType how many you need and tick upper case, no hyphens, braces or quoted as your code wants.
  3. Copy or downloadPress Generate again for a fresh set, then Copy all or Download .txt.
UUID Generator: UUIDs of version 4, 7 or 5, one or a thousand, in the format your code wants.

Ten random version 4 UUIDs are ready when the page opens; change the count up to a thousand and press Generate for more. Each has 122 random bits from the browser's cryptographic source, which is the standard id for records, sessions and API objects. Switch the case, drop the hyphens or quote them for code, then copy or download.

How it works

UUID v4 Generator is a web page that does its work on your own device. Everything you type or choose is worked out by your browser and never sent to a server, so nothing is stored and there is nothing to delete. There is no account, no sign-up and no limit on how often you use it.

Version 4 in code

Most languages make v4 UUIDs natively (crypto.randomUUID in JavaScript, uuid4 in Python, Guid.NewGuid in .NET). This page is for the moments you need some by hand: test data, fixtures, config keys, a one-off record.

Questions

Why do all v4 UUIDs have a 4 in the third group?

That digit is the version number, and the first digit of the fourth group is 8, 9, a or b, the variant. The other 122 bits are random.
