Choose 1, 2, 3 or 5 minutes and start typing the passage; the timer begins with your first key. Each letter turns dark when it is right and red when it is wrong, and your speed and accuracy update as you go. At the end you get your words per minute, accuracy, characters per minute, mistakes left in and raw speed, with a note on how it compares and your best score on this device. The passages are ordinary sentences, and pasting is turned off.
How it works
Typing Test is a web page that does its work on your own device. Everything you type or choose is worked out by your browser and never sent to a server, so nothing is stored and there is nothing to delete. There is no account, no sign-up and no limit on how often you use it.

How the score is worked out
Typing speed is measured in words per minute, where a "word" is any five characters, spaces and punctuation included. That makes scores comparable whatever the text: a passage of long words and one of short words count the same. Your WPM here counts only the characters you typed correctly, so mistakes left in do not add to your speed. Raw WPM counts every character you typed, right or wrong, and characters per minute is the correct characters without dividing by five.
Accuracy is the share of keys you pressed that matched the text at the moment you pressed them. Fixing a mistake with backspace removes it from the text but not from your accuracy, which is why a high accuracy matters more than raw speed: every correction costs time.
What is a good typing speed?
| WPM | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Under 25 | Hunt and peck, looking at the keys |
| 25–40 | Casual typist |
| 40–60 | Above average, comfortable for office work |
| 60–80 | Fast, the range of many professional typists |
| 80 and over | Very fast |
Getting faster
Rest your fingers on the home row (A S D F and J K L ;), find the bumps on F and J without looking, and keep your eyes on the screen. Aim for 95% accuracy or better before chasing speed. Short daily practice beats long sessions: a 1-minute test a few times a day shows progress quickly, and the 3 and 5-minute tests show how well you hold your pace.
Fair testing
The timer starts with your first key, the passages are ordinary sentences rather than random words, and pasting is turned off. Your best score is kept in your browser on this device so you can watch it climb; it is not sent to us.

Questions
How is WPM calculated?
Words per minute counts every five correctly typed characters, spaces included, as one word, divided by the minutes taken. 250 correct characters in one minute is 50 WPM.
What is a good typing speed?
About 40 WPM is average. 60 to 80 WPM is fast, the range of many professional typists, and above 80 is very fast.
What does accuracy mean here?
The share of keys you pressed that matched the text. Correcting a mistake fixes the text but still counts the wrong key, so accuracy shows how cleanly you type.
Does a 1-minute test give the same score as 5 minutes?
Usually a little higher, because it is easier to keep up a burst for one minute. The 3 and 5-minute tests show the pace you can hold.
Can I take it on a phone?
Yes, with the on-screen keyboard, but phone scores are not comparable with keyboard scores. Turn off autocorrect if it changes your words.
Is my score saved?
Your best score is saved in your browser on this device so you can see it next time. It is not sent to us.
Is anything sent anywhere?
No. The test runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent to us.
