How to use Pace Calculator
- Pick what to work outChoose pace, finish time or distance.
- Type the other twoPick a race or type a distance, and type a time such as 30:00 or a pace such as 9:30.
- Read the resultSee the answer with your speed, race times at that pace and even splits.
Type any two of distance, time and pace, and the calculator works out the third: your pace per mile and per km, your finish time, or how far you went. Pick a 5K, 10K, half marathon or marathon in one tap. You also get your speed in miles and km an hour, finish times for every race distance at the same pace, and even splits for each mile or km.
How it works
Pace Calculator is a web page that does its work on your own device. Everything you type or choose is worked out by your browser and never sent to a server, so nothing is stored and there is nothing to delete. There is no account, no sign-up and no limit on how often you use it.

How the sum works
Pace is time divided by distance, so the three numbers always come as a set: pace = time ÷ distance, time = pace × distance, and distance = time ÷ pace. A 5K, which is 3.107 miles, run in 30 minutes is 30 ÷ 3.107 = 9.66 minutes a mile, or 9:39 per mile. The same run is 6:00 per km, because 30 minutes ÷ 5 km is 6 minutes. Speed is the other way up: 60 ÷ 9.66 = 6.21 miles an hour.
Race distances used
| Race | Kilometers | Miles |
|---|---|---|
| 1 mile | 1.609 | 1 |
| 5K | 5 | 3.107 |
| 10K | 10 | 6.214 |
| Half marathon | 21.0975 | 13.109 |
| Marathon | 42.195 | 26.219 |
A mile is exactly 1.609344 km. The marathon has been 42.195 km since 1921, and a half is exactly half of it.
Common goal paces
| Goal | Per mile | Per km |
|---|---|---|
| 30-minute 5K | 9:39 | 6:00 |
| 25-minute 5K | 8:03 | 5:00 |
| 1-hour 10K | 9:39 | 6:00 |
| 2-hour half marathon | 9:09 | 5:41 |
| 4-hour marathon | 9:09 | 5:41 |
| 3:30 marathon | 8:01 | 4:59 |
| 3-hour marathon | 6:52 | 4:16 |
Even pace on race day
The splits assume the same pace the whole way. Real courses have hills, turns and crowds at the start, and GPS watches often read a little long, so many runners aim a few seconds a mile faster than their goal pace to allow for it. Races are measured along the shortest path a runner could take, so weaving adds distance.

Questions
What pace is a 30-minute 5K?
9:39 per mile, or 6:00 per km. A 5K is 3.107 miles, and 30 minutes divided by that is 9.66 minutes a mile.
What pace do I need for a 4-hour marathon?
9:09 per mile, or 5:41 per km, held for all 26.2 miles.
What pace is a 2-hour half marathon?
Also 9:09 per mile, or 5:41 per km, since a half is exactly half the distance in half the time.
How do I convert pace per km to pace per mile?
Multiply by 1.609. A 6:00 per km pace is 9:39 per mile. Change the Per box and the calculator does it for you.
How long is a marathon in miles?
26.219 miles, which is 42.195 km. A half marathon is 13.109 miles.
