Press Start for a stopwatch to a hundredth of a second, with laps that show each lap's time, the running total and the fastest and slowest. Switch to Timer, set hours, minutes and seconds or tap a quick time, and it counts down with a progress bar, the end time and the time left in the tab title, then flashes and beeps when the time is up. Both keep time from your device's clock, so they stay right in a background tab and carry on after a reload. Full screen turns the page into a big clock for a room.

How it works

Online Stopwatch and Timer is a web page that does its work on your own device. Everything you type or choose is worked out by your browser and never sent to a server, so nothing is stored and there is nothing to delete. There is no account, no sign-up and no limit on how often you use it.

A stopwatch and a timer that keep time properly

The stopwatch and the timer both work from your device's clock rather than counting ticks, so they stay right when the tab is in the background, when the phone screen dims or when the computer is busy. The last state is kept on your device: reload the page or come back later and a running stopwatch is still running, with its laps. A timer that ran out while the page was closed shows as finished, and how long ago.

Stopwatch with laps

Press Start, then Lap each time a runner passes, a round ends or a step is done. Each lap shows its own time and the running total, and once there are three laps the fastest and slowest are marked. Times are shown to a hundredth of a second; on a keyboard, Space starts and stops, L records a lap and R resets. Your reaction on the button is the real limit on accuracy, usually around a fifth of a second.

Countdown timer

Set hours, minutes and seconds, or tap a quick time from 1 minute to 1 hour, and press Start. The tab title shows the time left so you can watch it from another tab, and the page says when the timer will end. When the time is up the display flashes and the timer beeps; the beeps are booked with your device's sound system when you press Start, so they play on time even if you have switched to another tab. Turn your volume up and make sure the device is not on silent.

Full screen for a room

Full screen fills the screen with the clock, for a classroom, a workout, a meeting or a talk. Press Escape or Exit full screen to go back. Phones that do not allow pages to go full screen can be turned sideways for a bigger display.

Questions

Does the stopwatch keep running if I switch tabs?

Yes. It works from your device's clock, so the time is right when you come back, and it keeps running after a reload too.

Will the timer beep if the tab is in the background?

Yes. The beeps are booked with your device's sound system when you press Start, so they play on time in a background tab. Keep the volume up and the device off silent.

How do I set a 5 minute timer?

Choose Timer, tap 5 min and press Start. Or type any hours, minutes and seconds; the timer runs up to 99 hours.

Can I record laps?

Yes. Press Lap, or the L key, while the stopwatch runs. Each lap shows its time and the total, and the fastest and slowest are marked once there are three laps.

How accurate is it?

The display shows hundredths of a second from your device's clock. The real limit is how fast you press the button, usually about a fifth of a second.

Can I make it full screen?

Yes, press Full screen for a big clock on a projector or TV. Press Escape to go back.

Is anything sent anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser. The current stopwatch and timer are kept in your browser's storage on your device so they survive a reload; nothing is sent to us.
