Grade Calculator

Your weighted class grade, the score you need on the final, and test scores with a grading chart.

Works in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to us.

What to work out

Type a score as a percentage (88) or as points (45/50), and the weight from the syllabus as a percentage. Leave the weights empty to average the scores equally, or to add up points if every score is in points.

How to use Grade Calculator

Takes about 1 minute. You need your scores or the category weights from the syllabus.

  1. Choose what to work outPick Class grade, Final exam or Test score.
  2. Type your scoresFor a class grade, type each category's score and weight; for the final, your grade now, the final's weight and the grade you want.
  3. Read the resultThe grade or the score you need appears at once, with the letter grade and the working.
Grade Calculator: Your weighted class grade, the score you need on the final, and test scores with a grading chart.

Type each category or assignment with its score, as a percentage or as points, and its weight from the syllabus, and the calculator gives your grade so far with the letter grade and the working. Final exam works out the score you need on the final to finish with the grade you want, for every letter grade. Test score turns the number of questions wrong into a percentage and a letter, with a grading chart for the whole test.

How it works

Grade Calculator is a web page that does its work on your own device. Everything you type or choose is worked out by your browser and never sent to a server, so nothing is stored and there is nothing to delete. There is no account, no sign-up and no limit on how often you use it.

How a weighted grade is worked out

Most classes split the grade into categories, each worth a share set in the syllabus: homework 20%, quizzes 20%, tests 40% and the final 20%, for example. Multiply each category's average by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total weight of what has been graded. With 92 in homework, 85 in quizzes and 78 in tests, and no final yet, that is (92 × 20 + 85 × 20 + 78 × 40) ÷ 80 = 83.25%, a B. Dividing by 80 rather than 100 matters: until the final is taken, your grade is your grade on the 80% that has been marked.

If the class uses total points instead of weights, type each score as points, such as 45/50, and leave the weights empty: the calculator adds up the points earned and divides by the points possible.

What you need on the final

If the final is worth 25% and you have 83% going in, the other 75% of your grade is fixed at 83. To finish with 85%, you need 83 × 0.75 + final × 0.25 = 85, so the final has to be (85 − 62.25) ÷ 0.25 = 91%. The table shows the score you need for each letter grade, and says when one is already safe or out of reach.

Letter grades

There is no single national scale in the US; each school or teacher sets one. The most common is 90 and above for an A, 80 for a B, 70 for a C and 60 for a D, with plus and minus grades at the top and bottom three points of each band.

Grading a test

A test score is the number right divided by the number of questions: 22 right out of 25 is 88%. Teachers often keep a grading chart, sometimes called an easy grader, listing the score for every number of wrong answers; choose Test score and the chart for your number of questions appears.

What it does

  • Weighted categories, total points or a plain average
  • Scores as percentages or points, such as 45/50
  • Grade so far when some work is not yet graded
  • Score needed on the final for every letter grade
  • Test score from questions wrong, with a grading chart
  • Letter grades with or without plus and minus
  • The working shown for each answer

Questions

How do I calculate my grade with weighted categories?

Multiply each category's score by its weight, add them up, and divide by the total weight of the graded categories. 92 at 20%, 85 at 20% and 78 at 40% give (1,840 + 1,700 + 3,120) ÷ 80 = 83.25%.

What do I need on my final to get an A?

Choose Final exam and type your grade now, what the final is worth and 90 for the grade you want. With 85% going in and a final worth 20%, you need (90 − 85 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = 110%, so an A is out of reach; an 80% final gives 84%.

How is a test score calculated?

Divide the number right by the number of questions and multiply by 100. With 3 wrong out of 25, that is 22 ÷ 25 = 88%, a B+.

What percentage is a B?

On the common scale, 80 to 89 is a B: 87 to 89 is a B+, 83 to 86 a B and 80 to 82 a B−. Your school's scale may differ.

How do I calculate a grade with points?

Type each score as points earned over points possible, such as 45/50, and leave the weights empty. The calculator adds all the points earned and divides by all the points possible.

Why is my grade different from the gradebook?

Teachers may drop the lowest score, round differently, or weight categories by the points in them rather than a fixed percentage. The gradebook is the official record.
