Common questions
What is Unix time?
The number of seconds since 1 January 1970 at 00:00 UTC, not counting leap seconds. It is the same number everywhere in the world for a given instant, which is why servers, databases and APIs store time this way.
Is my timestamp in seconds or milliseconds?
Ten digits is seconds (the current time is about 1.78 billion), thirteen is milliseconds, sixteen microseconds and nineteen nanoseconds. The converter reads the unit from the length and says which it used under the box.
How do I convert a timestamp to a date in Excel or Google Sheets?
For seconds: =A1/86400+DATE(1970,1,1), then format the cell as a date; divide by 1000 first for milliseconds. The result is in UTC; add or subtract your zone's hours to adjust.
Why does the date differ from what my server shows?
A timestamp has no zone; the date you see depends on the zone it is shown in. Set Show in to the server's zone, or compare the UTC line, which is the same everywhere.
How do I get the timestamp for a date?
Under Date to timestamp, set the date, the time and the zone the time is meant in. The seconds and milliseconds are worked out for that instant, with daylight saving taken into account.
What is the ISO week?
The week numbering used in Europe and in many scheduling systems: weeks start on Monday and week 1 is the week containing the year's first Thursday, so 1 January can fall in week 52 or 53 of the previous year.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. Your browser does the conversion with its own clock and zone data. Nothing you type is sent to us or stored.
Is it free?
Yes, completely free, with no sign-up.
