Common questions

How do I work out sales tax?

Multiply the price by the rate. $100 at 7.25% is $7.25 tax, so $107.25 in total.

How do I take sales tax out of a total?

Divide the total by one plus the rate. $107.25 at 7.25% is $107.25 ÷ 1.0725 = $100 before tax, so the tax was $7.25.

Which states have no sales tax?

Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no general statewide sales tax, and Alaska has none at state level, though many Alaska towns charge one.

Why is my receipt rate higher than the state rate?

Most states let cities, counties and districts add their own rate. Type that as the local rate. New York City, for example, is 4% state plus 4.875% local, 8.875% in total.

How current are the rates?

The state rates were read from each state's revenue department on October 31, 2026. Changes already in law for South Dakota and DC switch on by themselves.

Is anything sent anywhere?

No. The rates are built into the page and the sums run in your browser.
