Common questions
How do I calculate a percentage of a number?
Divide the percent by 100 and multiply by the number: 15% of 240 is 15 ÷ 100 × 240 = 36.
How do I work out what percent one number is of another?
Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100: 36 is 36 ÷ 240 × 100 = 15% of 240.
How do I calculate percentage increase?
Subtract the old value from the new one, divide by the old value and multiply by 100: from 80 to 100 is (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%. A negative result is a decrease.
Why is going up 25% and back down not the same?
Each change is measured from its own starting point. 80 up 25% is 100, but 100 down 25% is 75; to get back to 80 you need a 20% decrease.
How do I take a percentage off a price?
Use the plus or minus row with minus: 1,200 minus 20% is 960. The line underneath shows the 240 taken off.
How do I find the price before tax?
Use the row that finds the whole: if 1,180 includes 18% tax, 1,180 is 118% of the price before tax, which is 1,000.
What is percentage difference?
The gap between two numbers divided by their average, times 100. It has no direction, so 40 and 60 are 40% apart either way.
