How to use PDF Booklet Maker

Takes about 1 minute. You need a PDF of single pages at their finished size.

  1. Open the PDFChoose the PDF or drop it into the box. It is read on your device and never uploaded. Each page should be one finished page, such as one A5 page of a booklet or one business card.
  2. Choose the layoutPick Booklet, 2-up, 4-up or Repeat. Repeat is for cards and labels: it sets crop marks, a 5 mm margin and a 3 mm gap for you.
  3. Pick the sheetLeave Twice the page size for a booklet or 2-up with nothing scaled, or choose the sheet your printer runs. The tool turns it whichever way fits best; change Turn the sheet to insist.
  4. Check the preview and downloadThe preview is the first sheet exactly as it will print, both sides for a booklet, with the number of sheets and the page scale beside it. Press Download imposed PDF and send that file to the printer.
PDF Imposition: Lay a PDF out as a booklet, 2-up, 4-up or repeated to fill the sheet, ready to print.

You want a stapled booklet and your printer only knows how to print pages in order. Open the PDF here and it is laid out as a booklet: the page count is made up to a multiple of four, and the pages are paired the way a saddle-stitched booklet needs them, the last with the first, the second with the second-last, and the inner pairs on the backs. The sheet is twice the page size unless you choose another, so nothing is scaled: an A5 document goes on A4, a half-Letter document on Letter. Print the result double-sided, flipping on the edge the preview names, fold the stack down the middle and staple on the fold. The preview shows the front and back of the first sheet exactly as they will print. Everything happens on your device, so the file is never uploaded.

How it works

PDF Booklet Maker is a web page that does its work on your own device. The file you choose is opened by your browser, changed there and saved from there; it is never sent to a server, so there is no copy of it anywhere to delete, no queue and no waiting for an upload. Most online tools of this kind send your file to their servers and work on it there, and many keep it for a while. This one does not. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on how often you use it, and the result downloads the moment it is ready.

Why the pages are out of order

A booklet is made of sheets folded in half and stapled together, so each sheet carries four pages: two on the front and two on the back, and the ones that share a sheet are far apart in the finished booklet. An eight-page booklet puts pages 8 and 1 on the front of the first sheet and 2 and 7 on its back. The order looks wrong on screen and reads right in the hand.

Printing it

Use your printer's double-sided setting and choose the flip the preview names: short edge for a landscape sheet, long edge for a portrait one. Print one sheet first and fold it to check. Then print the rest, keep the sheets in order, fold the whole stack down the middle and staple twice on the fold. A long-arm stapler reaches the middle of an A4 sheet.

How many pages a booklet can take

Up to about 60 pages of ordinary paper fold and staple well. Beyond that the inner pages creep outward at the fore-edge and the booklet does not close flat; split it into two booklets or ask a print shop for a perfect-bound book.

Questions

My document has 14 pages. What happens?

Two blank pages are added at the end to make 16, the nearest multiple of four. If you would rather not have blanks, add a page of notes or a back cover to the document before making the booklet.

Can the booklet be A4 size?

Yes. Pages at A4 go on an A3 sheet, which is twice their size; choose A3 if your printer runs it. On an A4 sheet, A4 pages are shrunk to A5.

Every other page comes out upside down. Why?

The sheet was flipped on the wrong edge when printing double-sided. Look at the preview's caption for the right edge, and print one sheet as a test before the rest.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The booklet is made on your own device and downloaded from there. Nothing is sent anywhere.
