What is a HEIC file?

HEIC is the photo format iPhones and iPads use by default. It stores photos in less space than JPG, but many websites, Windows programs and Android phones cannot open it.

How do I convert HEIC to JPG on Windows?

Open this page in Chrome or Edge, drop the HEIC photos into the box and download the JPG files. There is nothing to install, and it works the same on Mac, Android and Linux.

Can I convert many HEIC photos at once?

Yes. Choose or drop as many photos as you like. Each one is converted in turn, and Download all (ZIP) saves them together in one file.

Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?

The photo keeps its full resolution. JPG compresses a little differently from HEIC, so at the default quality of 92 the difference is hard to see, and at 100 it is smaller still. Choose PNG if you need no quality loss at all.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The photos are converted inside your browser and never leave your device. That matters for personal photos and pictures of documents.

How do I stop my iPhone taking HEIC photos?

On the iPhone, open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG. Photos you have already taken stay in HEIC, so convert those here.

Why does the first photo take a few seconds longer?

Most browsers cannot open HEIC by themselves, so the converter is loaded the first time you use it, about 2 MB. After that each photo takes around a second. Safari opens HEIC directly, so it is faster still.
