Common questions
How much does Etsy take from a sale?
On a normal sale Etsy takes a listing fee for the item, a transaction fee worked out on the item price plus postage and gift wrapping, and a payment processing fee that is a percentage of the whole order total plus a fixed amount. If the sale came from an ad Etsy placed on another site, an Offsite Ads fee is added as well. The exact rates are on Etsy's fee page, and this calculator shows the date they were last checked.
Does Etsy charge a fee on shipping?
Yes. The transaction fee is worked out on the postage you charge as well as the item price, and the payment processing fee is worked out on the order total, which includes postage. Moving money from the item price into the postage does not reduce the fees.
What is the Offsite Ads fee?
Etsy advertises listings on other websites and charges a percentage of the order when a sale comes from one of those ads. Shops under the annual sales threshold pay the higher rate and can turn the ads off; shops over it pay the lower rate and cannot. There is a limit on the fee per order, and nothing is charged on sales that did not come from an offsite ad. The rates are on Etsy's fee page.
How do I work out my profit on Etsy?
Take what the buyer pays for the item, the postage and any gift wrapping, subtract every Etsy fee on that order, then subtract what the item cost you to make and what you paid to post it. What is left is your profit. This tool does all of it as you type, and shows the profit as a percentage of what the buyer pays.
What price should I charge to make a certain profit?
Type the amount you want to keep into To keep this much and the tool gives the item price that leaves exactly that after every fee and cost. It solves the sum rather than guessing, so the answer is exact rather than close.
What is a break-even price?
It is the item price where you keep nothing: the fees and your costs use up the whole sale. Anything below it means the sale costs you money. It is shown beside the profit, so you can see how much room a discount or a sale price really leaves.
Does this include sales tax or VAT?
Only in so far as it changes the payment processing fee. Etsy adds tax to the buyer's total and sends it on, so it is not your income, but the payment fee is worked out on the total the buyer paid. Put the tax on the order into the field under More options and the fee is adjusted. It does not work out income tax or VAT you may owe on the profit.
Are the fees the same in every country?
No. The listing fee and the 6.5% transaction fee are the same everywhere, but payment processing depends on where your bank account is: 3% plus $0.25 in the United States, 4% plus £0.20 in the United Kingdom, 4% plus €0.30 across the euro countries, 5% plus ₹25 in India. Some countries also pay a regulatory operating fee on the order. Choose where your shop bills and the calculator switches to that country's rates and currency. The full list is on Etsy's payment processing fees page.
What is the regulatory operating fee?
A percentage Etsy charges sellers in some countries on the item price, postage and gift wrap. It applies in Canada, France, Hungary, India, Italy, Spain, Türkiye, the United Kingdom and Vietnam, at rates between 0.05% and 1.97%. Choose your country and it is added automatically. How much does Etsy charge sellers in India?
Indian shops pay the same $0.20 listing fee and 6.5% transaction fee as everyone else, payment processing of 5% plus ₹25 per order, and a regulatory operating fee of 0.05% on the item price plus postage. Choose India and the calculator works in rupees. The listing fee is set in US dollars and converted at the rate of the day, so put what it comes to in rupees into the Listing fee box under More options.
Is this calculator connected to Etsy?
No. It asks for no Etsy login, reads nothing from your shop and sends nothing anywhere. Everything is worked out in your browser. Etsy is a trademark of Etsy, Inc. and this tool is not created by, endorsed by or affiliated with Etsy.
Are the fees up to date?
The date the rates were last read off Etsy's fee page is shown under the answer, and they are checked again every few months. Etsy can change its fees at any time, so check its fee page before pricing a whole shop around a number here.
