How do I find the BPM of a song?

Choose the song file and the tempo appears in a few seconds. Press Play with a click on each beat to confirm it: the clicks should land on the kick and snare drums. Without a file, choose Tap along and tap in time with the music.

How accurate is it?

It works best on music with a steady beat, such as pop, dance, hip-hop and rock, where the number is normally exact or within a fraction of a BPM. Songs with no drums, a changing tempo or a very loose feel are harder, and the confidence line says when the beat was unclear. The click track is the quickest way to be sure.

Why does it show half or double the tempo I expected?

The same song can be counted two ways: drum and bass is often called 174 BPM or 87 BPM, and some slow songs are counted at double speed. Both are the same beat. The tool shows the other count under the result, and you can switch to it with one click.

What if the song speeds up or slows down?

The tool finds the main tempo, listening to up to four minutes from the middle of the song. Live recordings that drift give a rough average; tapping along during the part you care about gives the tempo of just that part.

How does tap tempo work?

Each tap is timed, and the BPM is the average gap between your most recent taps. Four taps give a first reading, sixteen give a steady one. If you stop for more than two seconds, the next tap starts a new count.

What BPM are common music styles?

As a rough guide, hip-hop often sits around 80 to 100 BPM, pop around 100 to 130, house around 120 to 130, and drum and bass around 170 to 175. Individual songs vary, which is why measuring the actual track helps.

Can it find the key of a song?

No, it finds the tempo only.

Is my music uploaded?

No. The song is opened and analysed by your browser on your own device, and it is never sent to us or anyone else.
