How to use Binary to Decimal Converter
- Type the numberType or paste it into the box for its base. The other boxes fill in as you type.
- Read the bitsThe bits are drawn below with their places; small numbers are written as a sum of powers of two.
- Pick a width if it mattersFor negative numbers or register values, choose 8, 16, 32 or 64 bits to see two's complement and the signed value.
Type or paste a binary number and see it in decimal at once, with each bit drawn under its place value and the working written out as a sum of powers of two, which is what a homework answer or a datasheet check needs. Hex and octal fill in too. Pick a width to read the bits as a signed number in two's complement.
How it works
Binary to Decimal Converter is a web page that does its work on your own device. Everything you type or choose is worked out by your browser and never sent to a server, so nothing is stored and there is nothing to delete. There is no account, no sign-up and no limit on how often you use it.
Doing it by hand
Write the powers of two over the digits from the right: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and so on. Add the ones under a 1. For 1010 1100 that is 128 + 32 + 8 + 4 = 172.
Questions
Why does 1111 1111 show as 255 and -1?
As an unsigned 8-bit number it is 255; read as signed two's complement it is -1. Both are shown when a width is picked.
