How to use Base64 Decode
- Choose the directionEncode turns text or a file into Base64; Decode turns Base64 or a data URI back.
- Put in the inputType or paste into the left box, or choose or drop a file. The result appears on the right as you type.
- Copy or downloadPress Copy for the text, or Download to save it as a file. A decoded image or document downloads with the right extension.
Paste a Base64 string or a data URI and read what it holds: text is shown as text, an image is previewed, and anything else is recognised by its first bytes and offered as a download with the right extension. Spaces, line breaks, the URL-safe alphabet and missing padding are all accepted, and an invalid character is pointed out by position. Nothing is sent anywhere.
How it works
Base64 Decode is a web page that does its work on your own device. The file you choose is opened by your browser, changed there and saved from there; it is never sent to a server, so there is no copy of it anywhere to delete, no queue and no waiting for an upload. Most online tools of this kind send your file to their servers and work on it there, and many keep it for a while. This one does not. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on how often you use it, and the result downloads the moment it is ready.
When the result is not text
Base64 often carries files: an image in an email, a PDF in an API response, a certificate. The decoder checks the first bytes against common file signatures and names what it found, so you can download it and open it with the right program.
Questions
Why does the decoded text look like gibberish?
The Base64 holds binary data, not text, and the tool could not match it to a known file type. Download it with the .bin extension and open it with the program it came from; if you know the type, rename the file.
